I work for a nonpartisan think tank, where I examine the role of philanthropic capital in addressing complex policy issues. The goal of the organisation is to help people build more meaningful lives.&nbsp;I have worked with family offices in the GCC to think about how they can act as&nbsp;a stakeholder in the funding of complex issues that span health, environment, and economic mobility. I spoke on this topic at a summit in Abu Dhabi (where I programmed a family office forum at a Khaleeji modern art museum, the Bassam Freiha Foundation).&nbsp; I am also proud to sit on the board of The Reflection Project, a London charity doing faith- and culturally-sensitive therapy work for children. Young people of Muslim heritage in the UK frequently come from the most socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds - people who have been displaced, experienced war and conflict, or generally from socioeconomic groups that have been systematically excluded from higher education and the workplace over generations. TRP was founded a long time ago under the banner of The Reflection Network by a very kind soul called Rachel, and TRP was catalysed into more action by the Grenfell fire - Rachel spoke about it with the BBC here.&nbsp; Fundraising is something I have done for years. I am fortunate to have money to give away, and usually this goes in the form of direct aid causes that come to me through my social networks in Tamil Nadu, where my family is from. My family focuses on direct aid as their model of giving, whereas I’ve tried to understand what ‘Western’ conceptions of giving are, as well. I've helped raise six figures for groups like the Ajyal Foundation for Education, Heads On, and the Scottish Refugee Council. For the Refugee Council, I had a capsule event called the Pleasance Supper Club in Edinburgh, a donation-based, multi-course dinner experience. I've also done direct aid work in South Asia, which I've documented here mostly so UK and UAE funders can actually see where their money went. I am distantly involved in my grandfather’s network of educational, charitable and philanthropic ventures which broadly operate under the umbrella of the Crescent Group.&nbsp; In my expansive pursuit of novel ways of exploring ‘giving back’ i’ve done some really enjoyable and meaningful things; with my best friend i hitchhiked from Edinburgh to Berlin raising awareness for migrant issues in Europe (ending at the Berlinale and going to Tresor when i was 21), I’ve taught skateboarding at a park in Amman for a couple of weeks while i learned displaced childrens’ stories, and then hitched around west bank for a short while. I worked as a campus ambassador for a social work charity called Frontline, volunteered at community soup kitchens for displaced Syrians newly arrived in Scotland, and once at a charity junk shop in Singapore. Since Eater, I wrote a bit about my heritage, Tamil Muslimness, for pages like Whetstone and Goya, and made friends who have commissioned me, like Apoorva, who runs Chlorophyll. Eventually I got a print commission after i wrote about KOL - a restaurant run by Santiago Lastra, a chef who ran a Mexico edition of Noma, and then opened his first restaurant in London, now a star holder and one of the best restaurants in Europe.&nbsp; I wrote about KOL and then did a stage culinaire there as well, following which I did one at another 1* restaurant called Akoko, where i worked under a chef called Theo Clench.
